Sport
Relief Mile on Water- Sat. 15th July 09:30 to 13:00
As part of the ‘Sport Relief
`06’ campaign, Bay Watersports offered free equipment hire
for all and managed to raise a fantastic £555 for Sport
Relief. This year saw the biggest Mile event in UK history with
over £12 million raided so far.
The tides on the day only allowed
for half -a-day of activities but each hour was used up to its
full potential, with most of the equipment being used at all times
by the many 'milers' that came to participate! In fact, some even
decided to go the extra-challenging mile without the use of a
kayak or windsurf. Jay and Cath turned up in their wetsuits with
a surfboard each under their arm and paddled the whole mile! Much
to everyone's surprise, Swansea Bay was experiencing a rare current
going from left to right which meant that they in fact paddled
a fair bit more than anyone had anticipated! However, they had
it "easy" compared to Joanne Mason who SWAM the mile(s)
by herself!! Everyone at the beach witnessed her almost disappearing
in the distance going in a DIFFERENT direction to the marker buoy.
Only afterwards we realized that she was actually aiming the right
way but the sideways current was taking her in the direction of
Mumbles almost faster that she could cope with. However, she amazingly
recovered her ground and leaving a U trace behind she managed
to go around the buoy and then back to the beach where she was
received with a well-earned round of applause!
